Running the New York City Marathon in 2017 was a transformative experience that rekindled my deep love for this race and the city itself.
After the challenges of 2016, I signed up again, somehow forgetting the pain of the previous year. I’m so glad I did because this was the year everything clicked, and it reminded me why NYC is such a special marathon.
This time, I wasn’t chasing a PR or a Boston Qualifier. Instead, I ran with Kim, and our focus was to simply enjoy the race. We planned meticulously, especially when it came to fueling. We packed extra food and made sure to eat well in advance, which paid off immensely—neither of us “hit the wall.” It was a game-changer and allowed us to fully soak in the experience.
The slogan for the NYC Marathon says, “It will move you,” and I can confirm they aren’t kidding. That feeling hit me stronger than ever this year, bringing back the same magic I first experienced in 2013. From the energy of the crowd to the iconic sights along the course, every moment felt like a celebration of running and resilience. Even the final stretch—those infamous last six miles uphill to Central Park—didn’t break my spirit. Instead, I felt uplifted by the sheer joy and determination that defines this marathon.
Crossing the finish line was unforgettable. We finished with a time of 3:38:03, my fastest NYC Marathon yet. But more than the time, it was the feeling that mattered most. Holding that medal was like cradling a newborn baby—pure joy and gratitude. It was priceless.
As I reflect on this race, all I can say is that I hope and pray my health and body will allow me to keep running for years to come. I can’t wait to take on new challenges, starting with the San Francisco Marathon in 2018. But NYC will always hold a special place in my heart, and I know I’ll be back. This race truly moves you, and I can’t wait to feel that magic again.
